Sandor Weisz is the Commissioner of The Mystery League, a company in Chicago that makes puzzles and games, mostly for corporate team-building. He has been making puzzles and games since he was a teenager. He publishes puzzles daily on his Twitter account and weekly on his newsletter. He lives in Chicago with his wife and two kids.
As a puzzle maker and father, we knew Sandor would have some awesome suggestions for other families with kids ages 5-10ish for games to take along while traveling. With his recommendations, jookie has put together a Game Pack Giveaway just in time for holiday travels. Whether you’re driving 30 minutes or on the plane for 3 hours, this game pack will help keep the kiddos occupied!

We played this game all over London on our summer vacation. It’s smaller than a deck of cards and fits in a little velvet pouch, so it’s easy to fit in your pocket. Most of the rules of the game are written on the cards themselves, so it’s easy to learn while playing. Because games are made up of several very fast rounds, each individual win or loss seems much less important, and there’s enough luck involved that kids can truly compete with adults.
Set // Spot It
These games are different but they are both visual and non-text based games where players look for matches across several cards. Both of these games can put readers and pre-readers on equal footing. Also, there are a lot of variations in how to play, and it’s very easy to build a fun non-competitive game out of them.
Another card game, this one has simple rules that are easy to learn. There’s a way to form alliances, so kids can sometimes team up to take down grownups, which can be fun. There’s also a bit of a press-your-luck element, that kids enjoy. The game requires some extremely simple math (mostly just less-than, greater-than, and the occasional addition problem).
Hive doesn’t look anything like chess, but it requires very similar skills. It doesn’t require any reading, but players do need to keep a set of rules in their head about how pieces behave. Because players build the board by adding tiles each turn, no two games ever feel the same. Hive tiles are beautiful and heavy and feel great in your hand.
Heads Up (phone game)
When we find ourselves in need of a game but have forgotten to bring one, our go-to phone game is always Heads Up. There are a variety of kids and adult categories, plus versions with pictures instead of written words.
Deck of cards
An evergreen tool for preventing boredom everywhere you go. Never leave home without one!
